Any garment maker knows that the amount of time we actually spend physically sewing the garment is very little. That’s because we are all, whether we like to admit it or not, obsessed with the pondering of options, the planning, and the process of making.

Do you find this to be true?

This is especially true for our friend, Emily. For Emily the biggest hurdle was picturing how a garment would look on her. And while Instagram is a great resource, no one seemed to have her exact measurements.

She loves utilizing her MyBodyModel croquis for her sketching. She also enjoys the creative process, and of course, buying fancy markers.

“At the beginning of the year I sketch out what I want to make for the year. Plans change of course and these are definitely not the only garments I make, but it serves as a general roadmap. This year’s croquis features 13 garments, six of which have been made so far.

I love making one-off pieces but over the last couple years, I have gravitated towards jewel tones and am making more “mix and match” items.”

Today our friend Jaylyn is giving us a sneak peek

Today our friend Jaylyn is giving us a sneak peek into her wardrobe capsule process. From planning to sketching to sewing, MyBodyModel helped facilitate every aspect.

She started with a list of 23 patterns, drew them out and narrowed them down by ones that she thought looked the best, already had the fabric in her stash for, and that she could create several outfits with each pattern which ultimately helps her capsule go even further. We’re loving the sound of this! ❤️

Here’s what Jaylyn had to say:

“Being able to plan this way is exactly what I love about having a custom croquis! Instead of just writing a list of patterns, sewing them all up and hoping it turns out well, I can see what my collection looks like together. I can see how the patterns will look on me, what pieces can pair well together, and even plan out fabrics so that everything will coordinate to make a cohesive wardrobe!”

The 3 body layout on MyBodyModel is the template that our friend Meghan found herself gravitating toward and for good reason!

She explains:
I like the way you can immediately compare your alterations side-by-side. Personally, I like to draw the original pattern on the left model and modify as I move across the page.”

She even used the 3 body layout template to refashion a Modcloth dress gathering dust in her closet and turn it into a skirt that is much her style and will actually get worn. Don’t you love it when that happens? We do! 😍

“Hi, my name is Thandi, and I am curvy with an extra helping of curve. I’m making a handmade wardrobe as part of my personal project to take back ownership of my body, to learn to love it for what it is, and not what I think it should be.” ❤️

In one of our favorite blog posts of all time, our friend Thandi took us through the process of choosing the best coat pattern for her shape. But not only that, she also takes us through the discovery of her own style and how MyBodyModel came to the rescue during this entire journey.

We LOVE hearing about all the different ways that MyBodyModel can empower creators when designing and sewing clothes.

Fides is a knitter whose handmade wardrobe consists not only of sewn garments but also of knitwear. Using MyBodyModel she’s been able to re-discover her shape and her preferences and visualize and create a bold and colorful new wardrobe of sewn garments AND knitwear!

Here’s what she had to say about her style revolution:

“I was used to wearing long cardigans to cover what I thought of as my ‘problematic areas.’ As for colors, my former palette consisted mainly of black, navy and maybe some olive. Wish I would have had my custom croquis from MyBodyModel back then – Much trepidation could have been avoided! But things have changed now and I very much enjoy being able to preview the complete outfit in advance!”

There’s nothing like a little me-made capsule wardrobe inspiration!

Raylene planned a comfy, polished, & versatile me-made capsule wardrobe using her sewing bullet journal and her personal croquis from MyBodyModel. She ultimately created beautiful and organized 2-page bujo planner spreads and 6 garments to create more than 12 outfits!

Her project planning page setup is *chef’s kiss*. In her sewing bullet journal she includes fabric swatches, notions or trims required, indicating if she has pre-washed her fabric, notes on the seam allowances and any adjustments if needed, and fashion sketches on her My Body Model croquis.

What’s your process for planning your makes?

Our friend Kari uses her MyBodyModel to create a sheet of 24 croquis and then does a “brain dump” of what she wants to make.

She explains:

“As a textile designer, my method for generating new content is to cast a wide net for inspiration and widdle it down to my final designs. It’s no different when it comes to my sewing plans. I love all of the layouts included in the MyBodyModel download, but in my crazy mind, 8 max wasn’t enough. I made myself a sheet with 24 croquis so I could basically do a brain dump of what I want to make for fall.”

The MyBodyModel app was a game changer for Kari in that it allows her to see and design for her body. Second, it allows her to sort & filter all of her sewing ideas visually.

“After cramming all of the possible looks onto my sheet of 24, I was able to get an overall picture of what’s working as well as bring me back to my sewing/wardrobe goals. I gravitate towards a classic relaxed fit style where staple pieces like jeans, tees, and layering pieces are the main ingredients.”
